Amber Marshall Does Not Play a Character in Her Off Hours

Amber Marshall has spent nearly two decades playing Amy Fleming on Heartland, a woman defined by her connection to horses, land, and home. What surprises people who catch her outside of that context is how little distance there is between the character and the person.

In a recent appearance on the Time Has Come podcast — filmed at her Alberta property, with aerial footage by Kerry James capturing the wide open sweep of her land — Marshall talked about what it actually costs to live in two registers at once. Famous enough to be recognized at the feed store, but genuinely invested in the life that recognition disrupts.

She does not present ranch life as a branding choice. Mornings on her property mean farm chores, sick animals, unpredictable weather, and the kind of physical problem-solving that has nothing to do with call sheets or camera marks. A 12-hour shoot day and a predawn emergency with livestock are both just work — demanding in completely different ways, and neither one glamorous.

What Marshall describes, without quite naming it that way, is the particular psychological pressure of public authenticity. Heartland has aired for close to 20 seasons. Fans have grown up with these characters, brought real grief and real joy to the stories, and the death of Ty Borden — her character's husband — still registers as a genuine loss for many of them. Marshall understands that. She does not deflect it or manage it at arm's length. The weight of the show's history is something she carries, and she says as much.

Her acting, she notes, has changed across that span of time. The longer she inhabits Amy Fleming, the more the emotional terrain of those stories feels like her own. That convergence is visible on screen, particularly in the later seasons, where the performance has shed whatever self-consciousness the early years carried.

But even mid-conversation about the show, she keeps returning to the farm, the animals, the land outside. That is not deflection. It is simply where she locates herself.
