Shaun Johnston Reflects on Jack Bartlett, Paint, and 18 Seasons of Heartland

The actor opened up about his favorite Jack Bartlett moment, the years of renewal anxiety, and what the role has taught him.

After 18 seasons on Heartland, Shaun Johnston still talks about the show like someone who never got too comfortable with it.

Fans know him as Jack Bartlett, the steady grandfather at the center of the family. In a recent interview, Johnston shared that even after all these years, he never stopped worrying about whether the show would come back for another season.

“I always worried between seasons, hoping we’d get renewed,” he said. “I love the show so much, and I’d always think, ‘I hope we get another one.’”

That says a lot on its own.

For a lot of actors, a role that lasts nearly two decades can start to sound routine. Johnston doesn’t talk about Heartland that way. He still sounds deeply attached to it.

When asked about his favorite episode, he pointed to one of the hardest ones.

Johnston said the moment when Jack says goodbye to Paint remains one of the most memorable scenes he ever filmed. “Usually, I overprepare,” he said. “I’ll cover the script with notes. For this one, I didn’t — I just showed up raw.”

Fans still remember that scene. The cast felt it too. “It was hard on everybody,” he said.

Jack has always been the kind of character who carries grief quietly, and that scene gave Johnston room to do exactly that. It didn’t need much. The weight was already there.

Off set, his life sounds a lot simpler.

He spends his time playing hockey and picking up the guitar whenever he gets the chance. “I play a ton of hockey,” he said. “And I strum the guitar whenever I can. I’m not great, but it makes me happy.”

Asked what playing Jack for so long has taught him, Johnston answered with a line that feels close to both the character and the man himself: “I’m gonna grow old gracefully.”

Jack Bartlett has always felt grounded, stubborn, weathered, and calm in the ways that matter. Over the years, Johnston gave the character a quiet authority that never needed much showing off. He just had to be there, and for Heartland fans, that was enough.

Jack’s look is much less permanent than people might think. Johnston said the silver hair and mustache are part of the job, not everyday life. “The ink comes out of my mustache every day and the wig comes off,” he said.

Long before Heartland, Johnston took a very different path. He went to business school, worked at a bank for a year, and even modeled in Toronto. “I was 6’3” and could wear Hugo Boss right off the rack,” he joked.

He has also taken on work outside the series, including a role on Wynonna Earp and stage performances with Edmonton’s Shadow Theatre. His favorite stage role was Eddie in Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love.

Despite his long run in television, Johnston said TV can actually feel more dangerous than theater. “TV is riskier. You might get multiple takes, but if something doesn’t work, it’s recorded forever,” he explained. “On stage, you don’t make mistakes when you’re well-rehearsed.”

He talks about acting like someone more interested in getting it right than dressing it up.

Even his plans for life after Heartland are modest. He said that when the show finally ends, he would like to watch more TV and play more hockey.

It sounds like a joke, but it also fits.

After 18 seasons, Shaun Johnston still comes across like someone who found a role that mattered to him and never treated that as normal. That feeling stayed with Jack Bartlett too. Week after week, Johnston played him with the same steadiness that made the character feel like part of the ranch itself.

That’s probably why fans still hold onto him.

  4. Suzanne says:

It's clear Shaun Johnston's earlier career must have been inwardly fueling his creative energy (bottling it up) for his days portraying the Heartland Grandpa. With all the differing experiences of the rest of the clan, he is the steadfast anchor for all the rest.
