From Soldier to Struggling Actor

Tom served with distinction in the California National Guard's 160th Infantry Regiment for six years (1967-1973). He even found himself on recruitment posters, a source of great pride for him. However, returning home from service, he faced a setback: he'd been let go from Fox.

The next eleven years were a period of struggle. Despite consistent effort, the TV shows Tom landed failed to gain traction. Yet, he persevered.

Then came "Magnum, P.I." The show's eight-season run (1980-1988) catapulted Tom to stardom. He won an Emmy Award, garnered numerous People's Choice Awards, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986.
