Will Tom Selleck Return as Frank Reagan on Boston Blue? Donnie Wahlberg Reveals What It Would Take

Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods

Blue Bloods fans, this one is for you. The door to a Frank Reagan comeback isn't closed. But according to Donnie Wahlberg, it won't open for just any script.

"I love him and I miss him"

Wahlberg spent 14 seasons playing Danny Reagan opposite Tom Selleck's Frank, from 2010 until Blue Bloods wrapped in 2024. Now he leads the CBS spinoff Boston Blue, and he has made it clear he'd love to share the screen with his TV dad again.

"I learned so much from him, and I have the utmost respect for him. I love him and I miss him," Wahlberg told PEOPLE. "I want him to be on the show at some point."

The catch: it has to be special

Here's the part every fan should hear. Wahlberg says getting Selleck to Boston will take "the most thoughtful, elegant episode" that he and co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis can put together.

Why such a high bar? Because, in Wahlberg's words, Selleck "takes the legacy of the show seriously. He takes Frank Reagan seriously."

Honestly, isn't that exactly what we'd expect from the man who sat at the head of the Reagan dinner table for 14 years? Wahlberg described him to PEOPLE as "a perfectionist on set every single day," adding that Selleck isn't the type to show up for a quick paycheck cameo. "When the time is right," he said, the team hopes to have "something exceptional enough for him."

There's even a little Frank wisdom living on in Boston. Wahlberg told PEOPLE he still quotes Selleck's favorite set mantra all the time: "Slow down to hurry up."

The Reagan family keeps showing up

Frank hasn't made the trip north yet, but other familiar faces have. Marisa Ramirez's Maria Baez has already visited Boston Blue, and Will Estes is set to appear as Jamie Reagan in a Season 2 episode. Wahlberg told TVLine the brothers' reunion was "very healing" and "emotional," since the two actors share history off screen too.

He also told Entertainment Weekly that the Boston Blue cast "welcomes them with open arms" whenever Blue Bloods alumni drop by.

Where things stand

Boston Blue, which co-stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Detective Lena Silver, premiered its second season on October 9 and airs Fridays on CBS. No Selleck appearance has been announced, so for now this is a hope, not a booking. But the message from Wahlberg is warm and clear: the invitation is open, and when Frank Reagan walks in, it will be done right.

For a lot of us, that's the best possible answer. We don't want a rushed cameo. We want a moment worthy of the Commissioner.

Now we want to hear from you: what kind of story would bring Frank Reagan to Boston? A family emergency, a big case, or just Sunday dinner with Danny and Sean? Tell us in the comments!
