Heartland Season 20 Episode 5: Amy's Snakebite Cliffhanger Has Fans Holding Their Breath

A rattlesnake, a missing horseshoe and a surprising photo of Nathan: "Once Bitten" left Heartland fans on the edge of their seats.

Heartland family, how are we all doing after Sunday night? Because we are NOT okay. Season 20, Episode 5, "Once Bitten," aired November 1 on CBC and CBC Gem, and it left us with one of the scariest endings the show has given us in a long time.

Spoiler warning: this covers the full episode, including the ending.

A busy day in Hudson

The episode started out like classic Heartland. Georgie (Alisha Newton) is back, looking for a new competition partner, and nothing Amy offers her feels quite right until Amy introduces her to Sprite, a former racehorse Lisa bred. It takes work to ease him out of his racing habits, but Georgie ends up buying him. (Honestly, a Georgie-and-a-racehorse storyline? Yes, please.)

Meanwhile, Lou (Michelle Morgan) signs up for an endurance race, Dex (Spencer Lord) turns to Jack when he's offered what CBC calls a "life-changing opportunity," and Katie and River get invited to a party that has Katie feeling uneasy.

That photo of Nathan

Then came the moment that got the whole comment section talking. While volunteering at a water station on the race course, Amy (Amber Marshall) and Winn have a surprisingly heartfelt conversation about losing their mothers. But when Winn asks to see a picture of Nathan, she reveals she's seen him before, with a well-known rodeo rider named Emma Carter, and shows Amy a photo of the two together.

To be fair to Nathan, a photo isn't proof of anything. But it clearly shook Amy, especially with so much already riding on their future after his proposal at the end of Season 19.

And then... the rattlesnake

Here's where our hearts stopped. When Lou and Georgie still haven't reached the halfway point, Amy rides out on Shadow to find them. Shadow starts favouring a hoof, and Amy realizes he's thrown a whole shoe. She heads back to search for it, and that's when a rattlesnake strikes.

The episode ends right there, with Amy hurt, Lou and Georgie still out on the course, and so many questions left hanging.

When can we find out what happens?

Canadian fans won't wait long: Episode 6, "The Extra Mile," airs Sunday, November 8, on CBC and CBC Gem.

U.S. fans, your wait is a little longer, but good news is coming. As TV Insider and TVLine both reported, Heartland Season 20 premieres in the U.S. on Thursday, November 19, on UP Faith & Family, with new episodes weekly before a holiday break. (Need to catch up first? TVLine notes the first 19 seasons are on Netflix.)

And can we just take a moment for the milestone here? Heartland is in its 20th season, the longest-running one-hour scripted drama in Canadian TV history. Amber Marshall told CBC News she'd happily do "another 20," adding, "I'll do Heartland till I die." Same, Amber. Same.

Now tell us: is Amy going to be okay? And what do you think is really going on with Nathan and Emma Carter? Share your theories in the comments! 🐴💛
