Amber Marshall on Filming With a Baby, Her Real Ranch, and What Season 11 Changed for Her

How Amber’s love for animals makes her Heartland character feel so real.

Amber Marshall does not just pretend to love animals for her role as Amy Fleming on Heartland—she lives it every single day.

Off-screen, Amber and her husband, Shawn Turner, run a real-life ranch outside Calgary. Their property is packed with animals: dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, cows, a peacock, an alpaca, and, of course, plenty of horses.

For Amber, horses are not just part of her job; they are a huge part of who she is. “Whenever it’s a sunny, nice day, I usually just stay home and ride my horse,” she shared. “My heart still falls for the horses over the hogs.” That genuine love is a big reason why her acting on the show feels so honest and natural. That’s part of why fans love watching her as Amy.

Filming with Babies Brings New Challenges

Season 11 of Heartland brought something completely new for Amber: working with a baby. At the end of Season 10, Amy and Ty (Graham Wardle) welcomed their baby girl, Lyndy.

Filming with a baby is a lot different than filming with animals.

“For me, the last decade was about filming with animals, but kids are highly unpredictable, so there’s a freshness to it,” Amber said. “It’s very raw and very real.” She even shared that she sometimes had to try to hide baby Lyndy’s happy smiles when the script called for her character to cry—a struggle any parent can understand!

Why Heartland Has Stayed Strong After 11 Seasons

Heartland holds the title of the longest-running one-hour drama in Canadian TV history with the same cast, pulling in millions of fans worldwide.

According to Amber, the secret to the cast’s long-lasting bond is simple: no egos. “There’s no ego on set. We’re a pretty easygoing group. No one lets the show or fame go to their head.”

Filming out in the peaceful Alberta foothills helps, too. “We’re out in the wilderness and you can just take a walk and take a breather with nature,” she explained.

Fans love the show so much they travel from all over the world—like Germany, Australia, and Texas—just to catch a glimpse of the cast.

Does Amber Want Kids of Her Own?

While Amber loves playing a mom on screen, fans often wonder if she wants children in real life. She has admitted she would love to have a family someday.

“I would have children,” she said. “Right now I have a very busy life. But my fans are hungry for me to have kids.”

With her kind personality and deep love for animals, it’s clear Amber is just as caring in real life as she is on television.
