Why Amber Marshall Almost Couldn’t Close the Door on Ty in Season 16

Watching Heartland Season 16, one thing becomes obvious pretty fast: after so many years, Amy Fleming doesn't really feel like a fictional character anymore. We watched her grow up, fall in love, lose Ty, and figure out how to raise a kid solo. When her voice cracks on screen, you feel it.

Fans knew this moment had to come eventually. Amy couldn’t stay frozen in grief forever. But when it actually came time to take that step forward in Season 16 — truly moving beyond Ty Borden’s shadow — it clearly wasn’t just another chapter for Amber Marshall to play.

And Marshall has spoken about how difficult those years of Amy’s story could be. In an interview with TV Insider, she said playing a grieving widow was emotionally taxing because she was constantly having to put herself into dark places. She described Season 16 as the point where Amy had finally been given time to grieve and was now allowed to move forward, be happy, and open her heart again.

Think about what it means to spend that many years in the same boots. Amber Marshall had spent more time on that Alberta ranch than many actors ever get to spend with one character. Every barn stall, trail, and fence line was tied to what she and Graham Wardle had built together on screen. After that long, you don’t simply shut the door and switch it off when the director calls action.

Marshall has also talked about how unusual it is to grow alongside the same character for so long. She said her own life and Amy’s have sometimes developed alongside each other, allowing her to bring pieces of her real experiences into the role.

During Season 16, the line between actor and character sometimes seemed to blur. Marshall wasn’t simply delivering scripted dialogue; she was helping close out a defining chapter of Amy’s life. In a sense, moving beyond that part of Amy’s story also meant stepping away from a version of the character Marshall had been carrying since she was a teenager.

The emotion works because Marshall doesn’t try to smooth over the struggle. She had to pull off a difficult balancing act: honor the fans who still see Ty in every sunset, while finally giving Amy room to breathe and move forward on her own.

And that was exactly the balance Marshall said the show wanted to strike. After Ty’s death, Heartland deliberately spent several seasons honoring his legacy and the relationship he shared with Amy, giving both the character and longtime viewers time to grieve before pushing her toward something new.

What makes the transition hit isn't a grand, dramatic breakdown. It's the small stuff — the hesitation, the quiet moments, the feeling that life is moving forward whether Amy feels completely ready or not. After everything the character had been through, simply allowing herself to look toward the future was a big enough step.
