Amber Marshall Says HEARTLAND Gives Viewers Something Other Shows Take Away

Amber Marshall did not plan any of this.
Stop Calling Heartland Wholesome

If you've ever wondered why Heartland has stayed on the air for so long, star Amber Marshall has a pretty simple answer.

In a world full of intense, high-stress television, she believes the hit family show is just "a breath of fresh air."

Why Fans Keep Coming Back

While talking with Trailblazher Co., Marshall opened up about why viewers keep tuning in season after season.

"There’s a lot of scripted television shows out there that keep you on the edge of your seat, but sometimes in a way that gives you anxiety," Marshall explained. "The thing I love about Heartland... is that it’s just comfortable. You don’t feel that anxiety."

Instead of adding stress, the show offers a safe space. Marshall noted that fans frequently tell her the series makes them feel good, positive, and inspired. Seeing those deep, genuine connections on screen helps viewers feel grounded in a way most TV shows don't manage anymore.

Marshall also pointed out to TV Insider that families love having a show they can sit down and watch together without worrying about the content. In a fast-paced world where everyone is glued to separate devices, Heartland brings people back together.

Finding Her Real-Life "Heartland" in Canada

Long before she became the face of the show, Marshall didn't actually picture herself as an actress. "I never really thought of it as a career," she said. "I thought I was going to be a veterinarian."

Once she landed her role on Heartland and committed to acting, she decided to make a major life change. By Season 2, she relocated full-time to Alberta, Canada—where the show is filmed—and rented an acreage.

"I had some chickens and a dog and, you know, it just felt like home right away," she shared.

That temporary move turned permanent in 2009 when she bought a small farm outside of Calgary. A few years later, she married her husband, Shawn, right there on the property, surrounded by family, friends, and plenty of animals.

Heartland continues to be a global favorite, keeping fans hooked with its wholesome values and beautiful ranch scenery. After nearly two decades on the air, the beloved series continues to prove that comfort, family, and community never go out of style.
