After 14 seasons and 293 episodes, Blue Bloods signed off on December 13 — and Donnie Wahlberg still can’t talk about the last night without getting choked up.

Playing Danny Reagan, Wahlberg recently opened up about the final days on set, especially the family dinner scenes that became the show’s heartbeat. Everyone knew each take could be the last.

“We were all walking this real delicate tightrope during the finale, knowing it was the last episode and feeling very emotional each day,” he said.

The hardest stretch wasn’t a stunt or a big speech. It was wrapping. When cameras finally cut, the cast just sat there. Nobody wanted to speak — because once someone did, it was really over.

Then Tom Selleck, Frank Reagan himself, recited a poem, a tradition he’d kept through the years. That was the moment it hit Wahlberg hardest.

He thought back to childhood evenings watching Selleck on TV with his mother and grandmother, both of whom have since passed away. And he thought about how the first scene they ever shot together was a dinner scene — the same ritual that closed the show.

“The first day we ever shot was the dinner scene, right?” Wahlberg said. “I didn’t have time then to be in awe of Tom Selleck or to think, ‘Wow, when I was a little kid, if you told me I would work with Tom Selleck for 14 years — or ever — it would be more than I could ever have dreamed of.’ And now here I am, closing out 14 years with him, and I allowed myself to think about that while he was talking.”

That’s when the dam broke.

“I started crying and didn’t stop for a few hours,” he confessed.

Even with the ache of saying goodbye — and amid reports that Selleck was upset the series was canceled — Wahlberg says he’s at peace. Grateful he got 14 years with that table, that cast, and that dream he once couldn’t have imagined.
